Kevin Campbell claims Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Runarsson may want to leave the club before next Monday’s transfer deadline following the arrival of Mat Ryan.
The former Gunners and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 25-year-old is now firmly the third-choice at the Emirates and may exit because of it.
On Friday, Arsenal confirmed the signing of Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan on loan until the end of the season.
Ryan, an experienced shot-stopper 121 Premier League appearances to his name, has replaced Runarsson as the club’s number two.
Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Runarsson had been given the green light to leave the Emirates with a European club having held talks over a potential deal.
When asked if he expected the Iceland international to leave before Monday’s transfer deadline, Campbell told Football Insider:
“He could possibly leave but if not, he will stay and be the number three.
“I am sure he wants to get out and play. He needs more experience.
“If they cannot get him out though he has to knuckle down and be our number three behind Leno and Ryan.”
Speaking on Runarsson’s future this week, Arteta said: “That area of the squad needs three goalkeepers and they need to compete with each other, challenge each other and everyone will get their role.
“After you have your role, you just have to support each other again to get the best out of each other.”
