Pundit 'wowed' by update on Aston Villa potentially signing 25-year-old 'better than Coutinho'
Noel Whelan has insisted completing a deal for Yves Bissouma this month would be a “brilliant signing” for Aston Villa.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old would be a “better signing than Philippe Coutinho” for the Villa Park club.
According to Sky Sports‘ Dharmesh Sheth (8 January), Aston Villa are “interested” in Brighton midfielder Bissouma – who has just 18 months remaining on his contract on the south coast.
The Athletic claimed on Sunday (9 January) that the Seagulls would demand in the region of £50million for the Mali international’s services.
Whelan insisted Bissouma is “one of the best midfielders in the Premier League” and claimed a number of clubs will be chasing his signature.
“That would be a brilliant signing – wow,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“I’ve always been an admirer of him. He’s so competitive in that midfield area. He’s got energy, aggression, but he also brings real quality on the ball.
“He’ll be looked at by quite a few clubs if his contract continues to wind down. He’s been a standout and so consistent for Brighton for a number of years now.
“He’s so good that in my mind, he’d be a better signing than Coutinho – no doubt about it. He’s one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
“It’s such an important area of the pitch to really win your battles and dominate, and Bissouma can do just that.”
Bissouma joined Brighton from Lille in 2018.
Aston Villa completed the loan-to-buy capture of Coutinho on Thursday.
Football Insider revealed yesterday that they are close to another big-name signing, after agreeing a £22million fee with Everton for Lucas Digne.
