Benitez delivers alarming response when asked about Newcastle future

By Danny Wright

Newcastle secured their return to the Premier League with a win against Preston on Monday, but Rafa Benitez gave a response that would have been alarming to the club’s fans when asked about his future at the club.

The Magpies romped to a 4-1 victory against 10-man Preston at St. James’ Park and fans are now expecting Benitez to lead them to a decent top-flight finish next season.

However in the press conference after the game, Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope quoted Benitez on his personal Twitter account as giving a less than full-blooded response when asked if he will be managing Newcastle in the 2017/18 Premier League.

When asked if he will be charge in England’s top flight next season, the ex-Real Madrid boss said: “You never know, that is football.”

With two games of the Championship season left, Newcastle will battle it out with Brighton for the league title, although Chris Hughton and his side are currently four points clear at the top.

The south-coast side could have sealed the silverware if they beat Norwich last week, instead they fell to a disappointing 2-0 loss.

Newcastle know that Brighton must not win in their last two games and hope that they beat both Cardiff and Barnsley for them to earn the second-tier title.

Benitez’s side have a superior goal difference to Brighton, who play Bristol City and Aston Villa in their last two matches.

The 57-year-old has been in charge at St. James’ Park since March 2016 and oversaw their relegation from the top-flight last season.

In other Newcastle news, former goalkeeper Shay Given has had his say on Monday night’s promotion-sealing win over Preston.
