Ally McCoist has said that it would be “incredible” if Steven Gerrard took over as new manager at Rangers, and has said that Gary McAllister would be the “clear and obvious” choice to be his number two.
McCoist hinted that McAllister would join Gerrard at Ibrox if the Liverpool legend took the job, after stating that he’d just spoken to the former Scotland international on the phone.
Talking on the Alan Brazil Breakfast Show (Friday, talkSPORT, 6am), McCoist said that he would be a really good fit behind Gerrard and that he thought it would happen.
“I know him [McAllister] extremely well and that would make a lot of sense.
“If Steven Gerrard took the job then McAllister would be a clear and obvious choice to be his number two.”
Football Insider verdict:
Is this the dream team for Rangers? Between them, Gerrard and McAllister have got a huge amount of experience playing, and McAllister has also managed Coventry City, Leeds and Aston Villa. McAllister knows the Scottish game, Gerrard is the up-and-coming superstar manager of the future, and combined they could be a real force. Gerrard is considering the offer from Ibrox but from what McCoist has said, if he does take the job, it looks like McAllister will come as part of the package.
