Rangers could make 'big statement' after source reveals 'brilliant' Alex Lowry news - pundit

Alex McLeish has insisted keeping Alex Lowry at Rangers under the noses of Man City and Newcastle would be a “big statement”.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 18-year-old could fetch the Ibrox club a “big-money” fee in the future.

As revealed by this site (29 April), Rangers are close to tying Lowry down to a new contract despite interest from Man City and Newcastle.

An Ibrox source told Football Insider earlier this month (11 April) that the Glasgow giants had offered the 18-year-old a new contract worth £5,000-a-week.

The youngster had previously knocked back Rangers’ opening contract offer earlier this year (16 February).

McLeish suggested it may simply have been a matter of sweetening the deal for the talented teenager.

“Alex has got great potential, we’ve seen that,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He’s obviously still got a lot to learn, but it’s certainly a big statement if Rangers can hold onto him.

“They’re finally satisfied with the deal. He’s part of the future at Rangers.

“It’s sad to see the likes of Billy Gilmour and Nathan Patterson leave, but Rangers can generate big money for guys like Lowry.

“It’s brilliant news because it’s been dragging on for weeks now, so maybe it was simply a case of giving him a better contract and a bit more security.”

Lowry has made four senior appearances for the Glasgow giants thus far, including one start in the Scottish Premiership.

The youngster’s current deal is set to expire in May 2023.
