Rangers have found their own Scott Brown after 'brilliant' development - pundit

Frank McAvennie has compared John Lundstram’s Rangers impact to that of Celtic legend Scott Brown.

The former Hoops striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 28-year-old’s “brilliant” form after a “tough start” at Ibrox.

Lundstram was the hero as Rangers reached the Europa League final with a 3-2 aggregate win over Leipzig last week (5 May), scoring the winner with just nine minutes remaining.

The versatile ex-Sheffield United star featured as a makeshift centre-back as part of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s three-man defence.

Lundstram, who joined Rangers on a free transfer last summer (2021) after leaving the Blades, has finally nailed down a starting berth at Ibrox after a mixed start to life in Scotland.

McAvennie suggested the Gers faithful will expect the midfielder’s form to continue.

“He’s got pelters off the Celtic fans for being too rough in the midfield area,” he told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“But Scott Brown used to get the same treatment from Rangers fans because he was like that.

“You need a player like that. Every team needs a player like that.

“He’s come through after a tough start at Rangers, and he’s done brilliantly.

“He played well against Leipzig, and they didn’t let them settle whatsoever. I really wouldn’t be surprised if they went on to win the tournament.

“Now the supporters know he’s capable of performances like that, they’ll be expecting it from him week-in, week-out.”

The Leipzig game was just Lundstram’s second appearance in the centre-back berth this season.

The Everton academy product is contracted until May 2024.
