Rangers are in talks to offload Greg Docherty as they make progress on signing Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu, Football Insider understands.

The Light Blues are working to strengthen their central midfield options and have held extensive talks about bringing in South Africa international Zungu.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider the club have held discussions about loaning Docherty to Hibernian for a second consecutive season.

But there is also interest in the 23-year-old from EFL clubs south of the border.

Steven Gerrard does not regard Docherty as part of his plans for next season and is willing to let him go.

It is most likely to be on loan for a third consecutive campaign but a permanent move is not ruled out.

Docherty spent the second half of last season on loan at Hibs after an impressive campaign at Shrewsbury Town in 2018-19.

Meanwhile, Rangers are in negotiations with French side Amiens about a deal for Zungu.

As revealed by Football Insider last week, the Scottish giants have offered a long-term contract to Zungu and are increasingly hopeful of reaching an agreement.

Amiens have made it clear they will let the 27-year-old leave if their £3.8m asking price is met after their relegation from Ligue 1.

He has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the club and came close to leaving in the January transfer window.

Zungu is a 24-times international who scored two goals in last year’s African Cup of Nations and has 57 matches in France following his move from Portugal in 2017.
