Rangers have been told by Preston North End they want £4million for Daniel Johnson, Football Insider can reveal.
The Glasgow giants have submitted a £2m offer for the versatile left footer, 27, as they look to recruit one more marquee signing before the 5 October cut-off.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Preston have made it clear they want their current bid doubled before they will let Johnson go.
It remains to be seen if Rangers will be willing to stretch that far for a player who has entered the last nine months of his contract and has spent his entire professional career in the Championship and League One.
Tellingly, Johnson is keen to move to Ibrox and has failed to make Alex Neil’s squad for four of their five matches this season.
Preston are braced for losing the Jamaican but believe his outstanding 2019-20 campaign makes him a big-money asset.
Manager Neil has told the media to draw their own conclusions about the player’s glaring absence from the Preston squad.
He was omitted from the 18 for Wednesday night’s 2-0 EFL Cup defeat to Brighton after playing 14 minutes of last week’s win over Derby County.
Johnson has not even made the Preston squad for their opening two Championship matches.
The attacking midfielder is in demand after a stellar 2019-20 campaign in which he scored 12 goals and provided eights assists from 33 Championship matches.
Able to operate in advanced positions or in centra midfield, he has been a consistent scorer and creator for Preston across 219 matches for the club, with 43 goals and 26 assists.
