Rangers should keep Emmanuel Fernandez at the club for another season if they are to progress under Danny Rohl.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who states that the Gers “can’t keep selling players.”

Premier League clubs have shown interest in Fernandez, whom Rangers only signed for £3.5million from Peterborough United last summer.

The 24-year-old has developed under Rohl as one of Rangers’ most important players, and could be sold this summer for over £20m.

Rangers are already set to lose defender James Tavernier at the end of the season, as Rohl continues to rebuild his squad, with the backing of the ownership, in a bid to compete in the Champions League.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Fernandez’s value will only go up if he stays at Ibrox.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Rangers need to begin resisting the temptation to sell players for big fees.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “If you’re to build a real squad that’s going to last for the next three or four seasons, you can’t keep selling your players.

“They may want to keep Fernandez for another season at least. He certainly will not go down, but he’s at the right age to go up in value and maybe sell him a season or two later once you have strengthened the squad a bit further.

“I would hope they can at least resist the temptation of that big cash payday and keep Fernandez there for the next season if they can. But I’m just thinking that when you get a chance like that, that’s what the big Scottish clubs still exist on.

“It is about finding that player at £2m to £3m and selling them on for £20m to £25m. So it’s a big one to turn down, but, in my view, they should keep Fernandez for another season.”

Wyness also told Football Insider that Rangers are likely to keep Mikey Moore at Ibrox for another season when his loan spell from Tottenham expires.

Moore has benefited from his time in Glasgow, and Rohl is keen to keep the forward at the club next season.

There is a possibility though that the 18-year-old could remain at Spurs if they are relegated to the Championship, with regular playing time on offer in the second tier of English football.
