Rangers have been told by ex-Aberdeen ace Noel Whelan to tie Connor Goldson down to a lucrative new deal or risk losing him to a Premier League club.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Whelan claimed the 27-year-old has developed into a “top-class centre-back” good enough to shine in the English top flight.
Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Rangers are planning to offer Goldson a new contract after his outstanding start to the campaign.
His current deal runs until the summer of 2022 and he attracted interest from English giants including Leeds United, Everton, West Ham and West Brom during the last transfer window.
“No wonder English clubs are sniffing around,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Connor Goldson has been amazing this season and is playing the best football of his career.
“Stevie Gerrard knows how important he is, that’s why he plays him in every single match.
“He’s never rested or rotated. Goldson always starts as he’s so reliable and commanding in the middle of that defence.
“Rangers need to protect themselves by tying him to a long-term deal. Get him signed up and get it sorted as soon as possible.”
Goldson has played every minute of Rangers’ 13 league matches this season in which they conceded just three goals as well as all five of their European games.
He has barely missed a minute of first-team action since his arrival from Brighton in the summer of 2018 for £3million.
Goldson has already made a remarkable 124 appearances for Rangers just two months into his third season at the club.
