Rangers told to U-turn on Gary Cahill after journalist's transfer update - pundit

Frank McAvennie has claimed Rangers should not sign Gary Cahill on a free transfer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker suggested the Gers should refrain from spending sizeable money on the wages of new players at the moment.

According to journalist Owen O’Brien (13 September), Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are among a number of clubs looking to sign the 36-year-old free agent.

The centre-back is without a club after his Bournemouth contract expired at the end of June.

The Bears are still looking to strengthen their defence following the exit of Calvin Bassey to Ajax earlier in the summer.

Van Bronckhorst’s side secured the signing of John Souttar from Hearts and Ben Davies from Liverpool in the window just gone.

As quoted by Football Scotland (17 September), Van Bronckhorst confirmed Souttar faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines along with Filip Helander because of injury.

When asked if Cahill could be the answer to their defensive problems, McAvennie told Football Insider: “He’s got good experience but I can’t see him coming up against someone like Kyogo [Furuhashi].

I look at the energy in football and it’s a young man’s game now. He would bring experience but I don’t know if Rangers have got any money to spend on more wages. Rangers are a big club, only a few games ago we were raving about them because they got into the Champions League.

They’ll be linked with everyone. Gary Cahill, can he come up here and do it? I don’t think so.
