Rangers well placed to complete Yates signing - 'fans will be happy', says expert

Noel Whelan has insisted Jerry Yates can “definitely” thrive in Scotland for Rangers after his scoring exploits in the Championship this term.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 25-year-old would be tempted by the Gers’ participation in European competition.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (27 October) that Blackpool are braced for offers for Rangers target Yates in January.

It is understood that the Championship club value Yates at around £4million and believe his price tag will climb if he continues to score prolifically in the English second tier.

He leads the scoring charts in the Championship alongside Norwich hitman Josh Sargent – with both players having registered eight goals and two assists thus far this season.

Whelan suggested the Ibrox faithful will be “happy” with Yates’ signing after the addition of unknown quantities like Antonio Colak and Fashion Sakala.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “This is a player doing it in a harder division than the Scottish Premiership.

“He looks an amazing player.

“Rangers have got the money, with the players they’ve sold and the European football – there’s no doubt about that.

“£4million is not a great deal of money to bring in a player who can be prolific for five years.

“If he can do it in the Championship, he can definitely do it in Scotland.

“Bringing someone in that people have heard of can be a good thing for Rangers. Why wouldn’t he want to go to a club who are likely to be in Europe every season?

“The fans will be quite happy that they are bringing in someone they have heard of.”
