Rangers are irresistible to transfer targets after Defoe reveal - Whelan
Steven Gerrard is building an experienced coaching team at Rangers that will make them irresistible to transfer targets.
That is according to ex-Scottish Premiership forward Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Rangers announced on 8th June that Jermain Defoe has signed a new deal and moved into a player-coach role.
Gerrard highlighted the pair’s close relationship and praised his former England teammate’s “amazing experience and professionalism.”
Defoe, 38, signed for Rangers permanently last summer after one-and-a-half seasons on loan at Ibrox.
Gary McAllister, Gerrard’s former teammate at Liverpool, became the manager’s assistant when he joined in 2018.
Whelan hailed the experience the trio bring to their respective roles and claimed that they make Rangers an attractive proposition for players.

“‘Trust’ is the biggest word in any occupation and in any walk of like,” he told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“Steven Gerrard surrounded himself with people like Jermain Defoe and Gary McAllister with the basis that they know each other in the game, at Liverpool and with England.
“It’s all about trust and having the right bodies, the right people. He wants people who will add things to his managerial experience because you need that around you.
“Three very experienced voice are better than one. It entices players to go and play there and seek those moves.
“What young striker wouldn’t want to work under Defoe and what young midfielder wouldn’t want to go and work under Gerrard and McAllister?”
Defoe has netted 32 times in 72 appearances for Rangers.
He won the first league title of his career as Rangers went undefeated in the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership campaign.
