Rangers have done great business after 'big' Gilmour reveal - Kieran Maguire

Rangers will “carry on reaping the rewards” from the deal that took Billy Gilmour to Chelsea in 2017.

That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively about comments made by Craig Mulholland to the Athletic on 11th June.

The Rangers academy director revealed that a “really good sell-on” clause and “significant add-ons” were included in the deal which saw then-15-year-old Gilmour swap Ibrox for Stanford Bridge.

Gilmour spent close to a decade in Rangers’ youth academy before being snapped up by Chelsea in a £500,000 switch.

Maguire hailed Rangers’ “good business sense” in negotiating potentially lucrative clauses into the Gilmour deal.

“He was quite clearly a very special talent from a very, very young age,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Rangers have done well to ensure they are joint beneficiaries of this and will carry on reaping the rewards further down the line.

“Clearly, Chelsea will also benefit from having him in the squad and having these step-ups in terms of his total transfer will be beneficial for Rangers.

“That is fairly standard to have a big sell-on included in his deal. It makes good business sense from their point of view.”

Gilmour starred when he made his competitive debut for Scotland in Friday evening’s 0-0 draw with England at the Euros.

His Chelsea debut came in August 2019 and he has gone on to make 22 appearances for the club in all competitions.
