Jurgen Klopp knows exactly what he's getting with Danny Rohl after 'personally intervening' to lure Rangers boss
Rangers fans can blame Jurgen Klopp if Red Bull Salzburg successfully poach Danny Rohl away from Ibrox.
The former Liverpool manager, now Red Bull's head of global soccer, has reportedly played a major role in identifying the 37-year-old head coach as the leading candidate for the Austrian club.
Over the years, the multiple title-winning head coach has been involved in transfer dealings with the Light Blues and beat the Ibrox side 7-1 in Govan in a Champions League group stage game in 2022.
Klopp has made his feelings for two of Glasgow's biggest clubs well known, admitting to being a fan of the Old Firm rivalry, and it wouldn't be far-fetched to think that Red Bull's global soccer chief probably saw what Rohl was capable of during the recent derbies.
The former Sheffield Wednesday boss faced Celtic five times in the 2025-26 campaign, winning once and losing thrice.
Rohl's only win against the Hoops came when Wilfried Nancy was in charge at Parkhead, and the French head coach didn't last for long in Glasgow.
Danny Rohl success overshadowed at Rangers
Speaking to the media while he was still in charge of Liverpool, Klopp said, "I don’t know how many Old Firm games I’ve seen — okay only on television — but when both fan groups were allowed, I love this game atmosphere-wise."
It feels like the former Liverpool manager has been keeping an eye on Rohl for a while now, and according to Salzburger Nachrichten on 11 June, he personally intervened to push the young head coach's name to the front of the queue at the Red Bull Arena.
While the German boss suffered a disappointing end to the season after the split, his work up until that point can't be diminished.
The Glaswegian outfit went on a 15-game unbeaten run midway through the 2025-26 campaign to claw their way back into contention for the William Hill Premiership title.
Rohl brought the Govan side back from an almost impossible position, as they were 13 points behind leaders Hearts when he was initially appointed, but the final hurdle proved too much for a team that undoubtedly came a long way after struggling under Russell Martin.
Danny Rohl may have personal reason for Ibrox exit
Football Insider covered Wolfsburg's interest in Danny Rohl in May, but the German manager publicly dismissed those claims.
The ex-Owls boss has emphasised his commitment to the Gers, but it must certainly be difficult for him without his family in Govan.
Rohl's wife and children live in Germany for stability, and moving to Austria would bring him closer to them, which is as good a reason as any to leave Glasgow.
