'People don't realise this' - Keith Wyness: Rangers summer U-turn down to 'agents'
Rangers' change in pre-season tours after Derek McInnes' arrival may have been down to the work of agents behind the scenes.
That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that managers can often be "very naughty" when it comes to summer preparations.
McInnes has recently taken the team over to Spain for a pre-season training camp, rather than the previously agreed destination in Austria.
Wyness believes that an agent may have got into the boss' ear and convinced him that this is the right destination for his team this summer.
Rangers flew out to Spain to begin their week-long trip last Friday, but first-team duo John Souttar and Danilo were both left at home.
McInnes' men played out a 1-1 draw with South African side Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday, and will play another game before they return to Glasgow.
Keith Wyness: Derek McInnes may have 'good experience' of Spain
Aberdeen's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that Rangers' U-turn may have been down to a wide variety of factors.
He suggested that McInnes may have had a "good experience" in Spain in the past, and will also be looking to "put his imprint" on the summer preparations.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, he also explained how agent involvement can sometimes be key.
"I've been around this particular issue with so many managers about changing pre-season tours, and I've got to say managers are very naughty when it comes to pre-season tours," the Scottish businessman said.
"They can often dictate where they want to go because they like the place itself, they like the staff that have been there, or they've had good experiences.
"Often it can be agents who are offering pre-season tours; they get in their ears. There are lots of factors that go on behind the scenes that people don't realise.
"It isn't always about clubs getting it wrong; it's more about managers deciding they want to put their imprint on things and they've had an experience there before, or somebody else has come in and convinced them this is the right place to be."
Mikey Moore 'personal links' mean new Rangers deal still possible
Wyness previously told Football Insider last week that Rangers may still have a chance of keeping Mikey Moore for another season, despite loan interest from Borussia Dortmund.
Thee Tottenham starlet has established strong "personal links" at Ibrox, and is still keen on the idea of a return for another season.
However, Wyness believes that Moore's advisors may have other ideas, and are instead likely to try and convince him to move to Germany.
The 18-year-old notched seven goals and three assists in the Scottish Premiership last term, but Wyness is adamant that he must being cast into that bracket of player permanently.
