Rangers could make 'crucial' Dan Neil decision by handing him new role
That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the midfielder has the experience to "command" that position of skipper well within the squad.
The new signing wore the armband from the off in the recent friendly against South African side Kaizer Chiefs, before it was later handed to Lawrence Shankland.
Wyness believes that Neil has the "right character" to lead by example at Ibrox, and feels he would do a good job if he is appointed.
The former Sunderland man captained the Black Cats to promotion from the Championship back in 2024-25, and is likely to play a major role in Rangers' squad.
Equally, Shankland was Derek McInnes' captain at Hearts, but Wyness does not believe that the boss will opt for the striker on this occasion.
Dan Neil understands 'weight' of Rangers captaincy
Aberdeen's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that Neil understands the "weight" of the Rangers captaincy.
The Scottish businessman noted the midfielder's previous experience at Sunderland as standing him in good stead to lead the Gers next term.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, he was in no doubt that Neil could be a perfect fit for the role.
"I think it's pretty clear, I think Neil is (the main candidate). (James) Tavernier had huge internal power as the captain. He had a lot of strength there. So it's going to be a crucial decision," Wyness said.
"The new manager has come in, and there'll be a new captain, so it's time for a fresh start, but I think Neil is the right type of character to do this. I think it's a good choice and I think he will be successful in this role.
"Although he's only been at the club a short time, he's got the experience to command that position and to be the club captain. So I've got no concerns. I think it's a wise position to put him into and I think he'll carry it off well.
"I'm sure he understands the weight on his shoulders completely."
Rangers only have one way to keep Nicolas Raskin
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on Thursday that Rangers will only be able to keep Nicolas Raskin if they hike their asking price up for him this summer.
The Belgian midfielder is attracting attention from clubs across Europe, with the likes of Hull City and Real Betis keen admirers at the moment.
Nevertheless, Brown has insisted that Rangers are in a "good position" with Raskin, who still has two years remaining on his current contract.
The ex-recruitment man has noted that pricing other clubs out of a move will be the only way to keep the 25-year-old, who is attracting more interest with every passing week at the moment.
