Chris Sutton has made a clear dig towards Rangers after Russell Martin was appointed as Leicester City’s new manager.

The 40-year-old will return to the dugout for the first time since his sacking at the Gers in what was a disastrous spell at Ibrox.

Martin only managed to win five of his 17 matches in charge before he was sacked in October as he became the shortest-serving manager in the club’s history.

Now, Sutton has seemingly mocked this stat after he posted that he hopes Martin is given the backing he deserves after the appointment was confirmed.

The manager will be aiming to get the Foxes back into the Championship next season after they were relegated to League One.

Leicester have had a torrid time recently after suffering back-to-back relegations.

Chris Sutton: ‘Hopefully Russell Martin is backed at Leicester City’

After being appointed as Leicester’s manager, Martin will be aiming to put his torrid time at Rangers behind him.

The manager was heavily disliked by a section of the Ibrox fanbase and faced consistent criticism as the poor results mounted up.

Now, Sutton has wished Martin look on his next adventure, while also appearing to make a sly dig at Rangers for their lack of backing towards their former manager.

Upon Leicester announcing the appointment, he posted: “Good luck to Russell Martin at Leicester. Let’s hope he gets the backing he deserves this time around…”

Martin has signed a three-year contract at the Foxes ahead of their 2026-27 campaign in League One.

Can Martin change Leicester’s fortunes?

After suffering three relegations in four years, Martin will now be looking to stop the rot at the Foxes.

Leicester have suddenly dropped down the football league despite winning the Premier League title just 10 years ago and lifting the FA Cup trophy back in 2021.

Despite his terrible reputation in Scotland, he has an impressive career in England and got Southampton to the Premier League back in 2024.

He has also overseen successful reigns at MK Dons and Swansea City as he looks to get his career back on track.

However, it remains to be seen if he is able to Martin is able to repeat some of this success at Leicester this season and secure an immediate return to the Championship.
