Paraag Marathe begins Rangers transformation after being baffled by failure to match Leeds - expert

Paraag Marathe can take Rangers back to their "former glories" after returning to the boardroom at Ibrox.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Gers need someone on the ground to understand what is "going wrong".

Marathe has returned to Ibrox just months after stepping down from his role as Vice Chairman earlier this year.

Marathe is the chairman of Leeds United and President of 49ers Enterprises, stepping down from his Executive Vice President role as for the San Francisco 49ers after 25 years.

The main driver behind this decision was to avoid any conflict with UEFA's multi-club ownership model, should Leeds United have qualified for Europe last season.

Now, he has returned to Scotland at a much more personal level, with some huge decisions to be made during 2026-27, especially after being knocked out of Europe.

Paraag Marathe 'really understands what's going wrong at Rangers'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson believes that the 47-year-old could be the key to fixing the ongoing mess at Ibrox.

"I don't know what's driven it, but it might just be that they feel that Rangers is not heading in the right direction and needs a bit more, a bit more power," he said.

"It's a big opportunity, clearly, for Rangers to turn that around and to start to bring it back to its former glories. It feels like it should be doable.

"When you've got that level of matchday revenue, when you've got that presence from a commercial perspective, you should be able to do better, I think.

"So, if you're in the ownership group, you're asking why. You're asking, 'what's going wrong?'

"And the only real way to find out what's going wrong is to be on the ground and be in the meetings and understand it firsthand.

"Maybe that's what's driving it. He really understands what is going wrong at Rangers and why it's not clicking into gear in the way that other things have."

Being knocked out of Europa Conference League qualification was a huge blow for the Light Blues, and a tough one to contend with.

Since then, Derek McInnes' side have won three games on the bounce and are sitting fourth in the Scottish Premiership table, five points behind Celtic.
