Rangers tipped for late-window signing spree to turn around 'miserable' start

Rangers are set to back Derek McInnes with a late-August signing spree despite a "miserable" start to the new season.

The 55-year-old was appointed to replace Danny Rohl in June, and has endured a busy summer transfer window as the Ibrox club look to banish last season's demons.

However, a draw against Dundee United and home defear against Hibernian have raised concerns, alongside a defeat to Jagiellonia Bialystok in their Europa League qualifyer.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown warned Football Insider that Rangers can be hasty when making decisions over their managers, and they must now remain patient.

McInnes has arrived as part of a long-term project to reshape the club's future after a constant downward spiral since 2021 which saw them finish third last season.

The boss showed with Hearts last season, when he pushed the title race to the final day against Celtic, that he can lead sides to success given the time and backing.

Why is Derek McInnes already under fire at Rangers?

Former Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider on 9 August that McInnes was wrong to call out the lack of new signings following their slow start to the season.

Speaking at the club's AGM on 10 August, Andrew Cavenagh made sure to place emphasis on everybody pulling in the same direction, insisting the club will be "stronger together".

Now, Rangers have been urged to remain patient despite a poor start to the season, with their lofty ambitions remaining in place as they continue to push forward.

"Rangers have had a pretty miserable start to the season again," Brown told Football Insider.

"It always seems to be the same old story there, they get a new manager in, a load of new players, they get their hopes up, things start badly and they're already calling for change.

"It's obviously too early for that kind of talk to start, even the most frustarted Rangers fan must see that at this stage.

"They have to be patient and give McInnes time to get his ideas across and get the players playing the way he wants, especially with the number of new players they're bringing in.

"Making rash decisions about the manager's future isn't going to get them anywhere, it should be a long-term process and they have to trust that he will help them to improve.

"We saw what he did with Hearts last year, he's obviously not a bad manager by any means, but these things can take time."

What are Rangers' plans for the transfer window?

Given their dismal start to the season so far, there is still a feeling that major improvements to the squad are needed at Ibrox, with plans in place behind the scenes.

Cavenagh confessed there could still be three to five new incomings before the transfer window closes as they aim to bolster the manager's squad.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider back in June that Rangers were lining up "major upgrades" in key areas of the squad following McInnes' appointment.

With nine deals already having been completed this summer, there is a belief that the overhaul has impacted the start of the season as the new-look squad continues to gel.

However, following the close of the window in a few weeks' time, McInnes will be able to work with a completed squad and get the best out of his new additions.
