Rangers work on signing 27-year-old, £15m January offer will be accepted

Rangers will have to splash out at least £15million to stand a chance of signing Lewis Ferguson in the January window, sources have told Football Insider.

Ferguson has been constantly linked with a move to Rangers over the last 18 months while featuring for Serie A side Bologna.

The 27-year-old has admitted that he would like to play for his boyhood club at some point in his career, while his father, former Ibrox star Derek, has been outspoken in his desire to see the move happen.

Ferguson senior recently revealed that his son had agreed personal terms with the Gers during the summer window, but they failed to submit a concrete offer before the deadline passed last week.

Derek McInnes is an admirer of Ferguson's talents, but Rangers face an uphill battle to revive talks over a move in the January window.

Bologna are set to stick by their lofty valuation of the Scotland international midfielder, with his contract not set to expire until 2028.

Ferguson shot to stardom at Aberdeen as a youngster before joining Bologna in the summer of 2022 for around £2.5m.

Rangers and Celtic each passed up on the opportunity to sign him then, and have been made to regret their choices in the last few years.

Ferguson has featured 138 times for the Serie A side and captained the club to their first trophy in 51 years as they lifted the Coppa Italia in 2025.

Sources exclusively revealed to Football Insider during the summer that Rangers would find it tough to sign Ferguson due to Bologna's price tag, after a swap deal with Nicolas Raskin was widely touted.

His father recently played down the chance of a January move after the Gers failed to pursue a summer move with terms seemingly agreed, saying: "Most things were agreed. But there was never a bid put in. They had agreed a lot of stuff behind the scenes with Lewis. He was up for it, which it was I am basically trying to say. I think that ship has sailed."

Rangers will certainly find it tough to agree a deal, despite continued interest, with Bologna holding out for over £15m as they look to keep their star man.

What has Ferguson said about playing for Rangers?

It is fair to say that the transfer fee is the only real stumbling block that is stopping Ferguson re-joining his boyhood club after he was let go from their academy as a 14-year-old.

He was asked about his thoughts on a move to Ibrox last month, and replied: "I haven’t thought about it. My focus right now is football. I had the World Cup, then the holidays, and then I came back here.

"Returning to Rangers? They’re my favourite team, and I’ve always said I want to play for Rangers. One day, even though I don’t know when yet, it will definitely happen if I get the chance.”

He is clearly keen on the move, but will seemingly have to wait until next summer at the very least to complete a dream return.
