Rangers winger Ross McCausland is set to leave the club in the next transfer window after failing to break into Derek McInnes' plans, sources have told Football Insider.

McCausland, 23, was expected to leave Ibrox in the summer after a loan spell at Aris Limassol last season.

The Northern Ireland international scored four times in 26 appearances for the Cypriot club but surprisingly stayed at Rangers beyond the summer window.

McCausland has only made one appearance so far this season, as he stepped off the bench to score in an August Premier Sports Cup win over St. Mirren.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, McCausland has no future at Rangers as it stands and is likely to leave in the January window.

He last appeared in a matchday squad for Rangers when they faced Falkirk in the Premiership on 2 September.

Ross McCausland's Rangers career is all but over after Derek McInnes snub

McInnes offered McCausland a route back to becoming a regular for Rangers in the summer, but he has failed to take his chance over the last few months.

He is unlikely to ever return to being the key man he was for the Gers in 2023-24, with an exit possible before his contract expires next June.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "There's a big potential that could leave in January. He's well down the pecking order in Derek McInnes' plans.

"Many people had probably expected him to leave Ibrox in the summer, but that didn't materialise. If he doesn't leave in January, he'll probably leave on a free next summer for sure."

Rangers 'worried' about Olwethu Makhanya exit - 'his head could be turned'

Rangers have concerns about Olwethu Makhanya's future

McCausland may be on his way out, but Rangers do not want to lose Makhanya anytime soon after his strong start to the campaign.

The South African centre-back has started in eight of their nine Premiership games so far this season since joining from Philadelphia Union.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Rangers are worried that Makhanya could have his head turned ahead of the next transfer window.

Clubs across Europe are reportedly monitoring his progress at Ibrox and may end up making a move for his services in the new year.
