Sources: Rangers open talks to sign Coventry City star Jahnoah Markelo
Rangers are in ongoing talks with Coventry City over a deal to sign winger Jahnoah Markelo, sources have told Football Insider.
The 23-year-old arrived at the CBS Arena in the January transfer window, but has struggled to make an impact under Frank Lampard and could be allowed to move on.
Rangers are well-placed to lure the winger to Ibrox this summer and believe there is a deal to be done, after what has proved to be a busy window so far.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Rangers are in talks with Coventry and hope to reach an agreement for Markelo in the near future.
Derek McInnes is keen to bolster his squad with new additions, while the signing of a new winger is high on Rangers' shortlist given a lack of depth in wide areas.
The Scottish Premiership has already began, with Rangers limping to a 1-1 draw against Dundee United, and they are determined to land new players to help their cause.
Could Rangers make a move to sign Jahnoah Markelo?
Football Insider revealed in June that McInnes will play a big part in Rangers' transfer plans, and the addition of a new winger is among the boss' priorities.
Markelo has emerged as a leading contender for the role, given his likely availability after struggling to break into the starting XI at Coventry City.
Rangers have been keeping a close eye on the winger's situation, and are now in talks to agree terms as they accelerate their plans in the transfer window's final month.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Talks are ongoing between Rangers and Coventry City to see if they can get a deal agreed for Markelo.
"As you said, he only arrived in January but really struggled to stake a claim in Frank Lampard's side.
"Obviously, it was hard to come in there with the team doing so well in the Championship, because Lampard didn't really want to change things.
"He might find his opportunities limited again at Coventry this season, with the club in the Premier League and also looking to strengthen their squad as well.
"The two clubs are continuing discussions, trying to thrash out a deal and I think there's a real optimism from Rangers that they can get a deal over the line from Markelo."
Which other wingers are on Rangers' radar?
Rangers' pursuit of a new winger has seen them assess a number of potential targets in the transfer market, with Markelo far from the only name on their list.
Djedi Gassama and Findlay Curtis are currently the only wide options availbale to McInnes, with Ross McCausland widely expected to move on before the window closes.
As a result, Football Insider revealed on 17 July that Rangers have expressed their interest in re-signing Vaclav Cerny following his loan spell at Ibrox in the 2024-25 season.
However, there is a belief they will struggle to match his lofty asking price, with Besiktas set to demand a significant fee to let him go just one year after his arrival.
Cerny remains highly regarded at Ibrox, and they are keen to do a deal, but will only make it happen at the right price which now seems off the table given Besiktas' demands.
