Joe Aribo’s Rangers return inevitable as Steven Gerrard edges closer to Ibrox appointment – verdict
The Gers have reportedly been put on alert by the news as the 29-year-old searches for a new club ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Aribo had a sensational spell at Rangers between 2019 and 2022, where he won two trophies before making a move to Southampton for £10million.
In the midst of this, Danny Rohl could be off to RB Salzburg, with Steven Gerrard reportedly under discussion for an Ibrox return.
If this goes through, it would give the Old Firm club a major advantage in sealing a deal for Aribo.
The midfielder would surely be enticed not only to rejoin the club that he had so much success at, but also to play under the manager who made this happen.
Joe Aribo was sensational under Steven Gerrard
Under the guidance of Gerrard, Aribo was simply sensational during his time at Rangers.
The midfielder was crucial to their Scottish Premiership title victory and continued this form after the manager had departed for Aston Villa.
Therefore, when Aribo is weighing up his options this summer, a return to Ibrox feels inevitable if Gerrard is in charge, especially now that the Daily Record has reported that the Gers are alert to his situation.
The 29-year-old will be keen to rekindle his form as he enters the prime of his career, and he will know that Gerrard is capable of getting the best out of him.
As a result, if Gerrard is appointed as Rohl’s successor, with Rangers Review reporting that he is in the frame, Aribo could well quickly follow him through the entrance door.
How good was Aribo under Gerrard at Rangers?
In the 2021-22 Scottish Premiership title-winning season, Aribo was simply fantastic and has the stats to prove this.
According to Fotmob on 12 June, the midfielder was averaging 0.28 goals, 1.90 shots, 1.46 chances created, 2.37 successful dribbles and 5.54 touches in the opposition box per match in the top-flight.
If these stats can be replicated next season, it could transform the club and make them serious title contenders once more, and potentially end Celtic’s dominance in Scotland.
However, it remains to be seen if Rangers are able to get the deal over the line, especially if Rohl remains in his post ahead of the new campaign.
