Keith Wyness shares Rangers transfer concern as third summer signing agreed

Rangers have backed themselves into a corner a little with their desire to target more players with proven Scottish Premiership experience.

That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Light Blues cannot totally move away from their need to explore obscure European markets.

Andrew Cavenagh and the recruitment team have committed to trying to build a core of Scottish and Premiership talent in the squad, but Wyness has warned that this could have financial impacts.

He pointed towards some of the club's best business in recent years coming from smaller European leagues, and still believes that is where the best value is for Scottish clubs.

Rangers are closing in on the signing of Ben Godfrey, with an agreement said by sources to be in place, having already added Lawrence Shankland and Ross McCrorie to their squad this summer.

They are also being heavily linked with Scotland international Lewis Ferguson, as they look to rebuild their group for Derek McInnes.

Keith Wyness: Rangers can't neglect historical transfer success

Aberdeen's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that Rangers must search for a blend of domestic and European talent in their summer business.

He emphasised that a wide variety of different additions to the squad will help to keep the "financial machine" ticking behind the scenes at Ibrox.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested that Rangers should only focus on the spine of the team for building their Scottish core.

"It's a bit of a double-edged sword really because, Rangers want more Scots and SPL experience in there, but at the same time, their financial model means that they've got to buy cheaper from different European markets," he said.

"They've got to take them in the shop window and sell them on. That's historically what has worked for them, and it's worked for Celtic as well. So that's what Rangers have got to try and balance.

"You've got to get that core of the team, though, and I understand having that core be Scottish in that sense of a captain and those sort of central defender, midfielder and a striker if possible.

"But you can't just make it all about that because that won't work financially either. So it's got to be that blend. I think there's nothing wrong with having that blend of SPL experience because you do need to understand that league.

"McInnes will be trying to find that balance, and I hope he doesn't swing too far one way in terms of that Scottish experience because you do need that financial machine to be ticking away in the background as well at Rangers."

Sources: Rangers' chances of signing Lewis Ferguson in swap deal revealed

What are Rangers' chances of signing Lewis Ferguson?

Football Insider revealed last week that Rangers face an uphill battle to agree a swap deal with Bologna between Ferguson and Nicolas Raskin.

The former's valuation is set to spike after some promising displays at the World Cup, and an agreement of this style is likely to be too complex for Rangers.

The arrival of Domenico Tedesco as Bologna's new manager has also thrown an additional complication into the fray, as it is currently unclear how Ferguson fits into his plans.

Rangers have consistently been linked with the midfielder in recent years, but it seems that once again, a deal may be out of reach for them.
