Rangers backed to agree '£5m + add-ons' Anthony Patterson deal - Keith Wyness
Rangers will get a deal done to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson for as little as an initial £5million this summer.
That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who has backed the Ibrox outfit to win the race for the shot-stopper.
The 26-year-old is also attracting strong interest from several English Championship sides, as he looks set to leave the Stadium of Light this summer.
Wyness is adamant that Rangers cannot afford Patterson's current £8m price tag, but added that they are lining up a swoop involving significant future payments.
The Gers are already exploring a deal for the gloveman, who spent the second half of the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Millwall.
Rangers are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, amid sustained concerns regarding the consistency of Jack Butland.
Keith Wyness: Anthony Patterson the 'right man' for Rangers
Aberdeen's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that Patterson would be a good fit at Ibrox.
The Scottish businessman made it clear that he would be the "right man" to take over between the posts at Ibrox, but also acknowledged that Rangers' recruitment team will have to get creative to strike a deal.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness made it clear that he expects the transfer to be sealed with a series of add-on payments.
"I think Patterson's the right player, but the wrong price. I don't think that £8m will happen for Rangers," he said.
"They can't go that far for a goalkeeper. I think the deal can get done at about £5m plus add-ons, and I think that's where it will go.
"I do expect it to happen though, and I think he is the right player for Rangers. He would be an upgrade on Butlund's performances last season."
Would Rangers keep Jack Butland regardless?
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Rangers have no intention of selling Butland this summer, amid interest from several Premier League clubs.
A move for Patterson would create the potential for that stance to change in the coming weeks, the pair could potentially compete against each other.
Butland is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Ibrox, and at 33, may not be liable to receive a new deal from the club.
Rangers need to begin succession planning in the goalkeeping department, and Patterson could potentially arrive alongside him ahead of 2026-27.
