Celtic have lost the race to Tottenham Hotspur’s rising star Alfie Devine this summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old has now completed a move back to Preston North End on a permanent deal.

The midfielder had a successful loan spell at the Championship club in the 2025-26 campaign, which had attracted the interest of Celtic and Martin O’Neill.

However, any chance of the Hoops securing the signing is now over, with Preston spending around £6million to secure the deal.

This news has seen many Rangers fans mock their Old Firm rivals, who have now missed out on another transfer target.

The Gers have been highly active in the transfer window so far, and have brought in five players to date.

As it stands, Celtic are yet to officially bring a single player this transfer window, in what has been a difficult few weeks for the club.

The Hoops are reportedly closing in on Camilo Duran, but their inability to secure the deal for Devine will be a massive blow.

Rangers fans understand this, especially with so many Celtic midfielders linked with a move away from the club this summer.

As a result, when it became clear that Devine would complete a move to Preston this summer transfer window, the Ibrox fanbase took to X to mock the Hoops, believing that they simply cannot afford to splash the cash on the Tottenham youngster.

Which other midfielders are Celtic linked with?

Another midfielder Celtic have been consistently linked with in recent months is Miguel Chaiwa.

The Hibernian star impressed in the Scottish Premiership last season as the club qualified for Europe.

Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Celtic will only look to bid as high as £5m for Chaiwa this summer.

The Hoops are very keen on brining in the 22-year-old this summer, but will not pay over the odds to sign him.

Hibs had reportedly set a £7m price tag on their star man, in an attempt to deter potential suitors this transfer window.

The Edinburgh club are under no pressure to sell Chaiwa this summer, but have braced themselves for interest from the Hoops this summer transfer window.
