Rangers put plan in place to move Thelo Aasgaard to 'English club'
Rangers will potentially look to loan Thelo Aasgaard out to a team in the English Championship if his move to Anderlecht doesn’t work out.
That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the English second tier would be the best “shop window” for the Norway international.
The forward is currently out on loan at Belgian side Anderlecht, who have the option to buy him for £6million, but he has played just 112 minutes of league football so far.
Wyness believes that Rangers are chasing a way to get the full “asset value” when they eventually sell Aasgaard.
Derek McInnes made it clear in the summer that the 24-year-old is not part of his plans, and the writing appears to be on the wall for him at Ibrox.
Rangers splashed out £3.5million to take Aasgaard north of the border back in 2025, but he simply hasn’t made an impact since moving up to Scotland.
Anderlecht loan ‘should work’ for Thelo Aasgaard
Aberdeen’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs – believes that the Belgian Pro League is a standard of football that “should work” for Aasgaard in terms of helping to bring out his best form.
However, the Scottish businessman is also convinced that Rangers will be assessing their options for him long-term after a difficult start to his loan spell.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained that the Championship could be the next port of call if Anderlecht opt against triggering their purchase option.
“I think they'd probably try and place him in the Championship in my view and hope that can work,” he said.
“There'll be clubs mid-table and below in the Championship that would look to take him, and I think it may be better suited to him. It should work over there, but it depends on the manager and how the manager views him, et cetera.
“It isn't working out right now, and Rangers with this model we talked about, they’ve got to be very clear over the plan for each player has got to work if they're going to keep on progressing, and they've got to show players as well that they can help them to move and to get the right positioning.
“The Championship in my view would be a better shop window for him. He needs to fit in with a certain type of manager and a certain style of play, then I think they can get the asset value.”
Rangers lining up ‘easy’ winger deal
Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Rangers could find it “easy” to sign Djurgarden winger Oskar Fallenius on a free transfer in January.
The 24-year-old appears increasingly likely to leave the Swedish outfit this winter, with his contract expiring at the end of December.
Fallenius has only started 10 of Djurgarden’s 22 league games so far this season, but has chipped in with two goals and three assists from his limited opportunities.
He also tops his team’s statistics for both expected assists per 90 and sprints per 90, highlighting the impact he has made when he has been on the pitch.
