Rangers will be able to land Excelsior centre-back Casper Widell for a fee of less than £2million in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The 23-year-old is out of contract with the Eredivisie outfit at the end of the campaign, and will be available for a cut-price fee as a result this winter.

Rangers have continued to keep tabs on Widell, after being heavily linked with a move for him in the recent summer window.

Excelsior were holding out for a £2m fee on that occasion, but sources now say that they are ready to lower their demands in an attempt to cash in on their star in January.

Rangers have had a relatively settled backline so far this season, but Derek McInnes is still keen to bolster it further with capable options.

The Glasgow giants are prepared to pay a small fee for Widell if the chance arises, rather than risking other clubs landing him on a free next summer.

Rangers eye move to bolster centre-back depth

Widell's summer move to Ibrox was ultimately blocked by Rangers' inability to move John Souttar out the door.

With the Scotland international now being frozen out by McInnes, his side have been left with a lack of natural centre-back options.

Emmanuel Fernandez and Olwethu Makhanya have impressed so far this season, but behind them there is only Ben Godfrey and Dujon Sterling, who has been used at right-back of late.

A face at the heart of the backline would be a welcome addition when the winter window opens, and Widell is a prime candidate to address that issue.

Rangers have monitored his progress in the Netherlands for several seasons now, and their desire to bring him in has only heightened as his contract has run down.

Rangers line up 'easy' Oskar Fallenius deal

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday that Rangers are lining up an "easy" move to sign Djurgarden winger Oskar Fallenius in January.

The 24-year-old is out of contract with the Swedish outfit at the end of December, and appears increasingly likely to leave them for free.

Fallenius has only started 10 games during this summer's Allsvenskan season, but has still been able to chip in with two goals and three assists.

Nevertheless, he has performed well when called upon, and leads his team's stats for both expected assists per 90 and sprints per 90.
