Shay Given delivers two-word verdict on Newcastle season, blames one thing for current form

Shay Given has revealed he worries for his former club and claims their current form is “relegation material”.

During Yahoo Sports’ In On Goal, the retired goalkeeper was pessimistic about the Magpies’ Premier League future if they did not improve their current form.

“I’d say I’m worried yeah,” revealed the 41-year-old. “They’ve only won one game in two months so that’s relegation material if in the next two months they only won one more game.”

The 41-year-old suggested that all the takeover news had potentially sidetracked not only the players or the management team but the fans and the whole city.

The retired goalkeeper hoped that Rafa Benitez had transfer targets for Mike Ashley and bigger targets if the takeover happens before January.

The Watford performance worried the former Magpie in particular, because of the defensive problems – an area he previously believed to be the side’s strength.

The former Republic of Ireland international said that he believed the club should be competing for the Champions League places given their size, not worrying about relegation.

Newcastle United sit 14th with 15 points from 12 games ahead of their clash on Saturday with third place Chelsea.

The Magpies have only won one league game away from home and that was back in September against Swansea City.

In other Newcastle United team news, current boss Rafael Benitez has delivered a concerning update on the fitness of his stars ahead of the clash with Chelsea.
