Confirmed: Newcastle goalkeeper a doubt with injury blow on international duty
Newcastle United youngster Freddie Woodman is a doubt for England under-21’s friendly clash against Romania on Saturday as a result of an injury issue.
The 21-year-old goalkeeper, who is currently on loan with Aberdeen after departing during the January transfer window, was confirmed as one of two doubts between the sticks by manager Aidy Boothroyd, with Norwich City’s Angus Gunn also suffering a niggle, leading to both shot stoppers being left out of training.
Boothroyd told Sky Sports: “Because they’re both goalkeepers we’ve taken them out of the firing line, as a precaution. I’m hoping both will be fine.”
It has been claimed by reliable journalist Tim Nash via his personal Twitter account that Woodman, who made his debut for Newcastle earlier this season in an FA Cup match, is suffering from a hip injury, while Gunn’s concern lies in his back.

The young Magpies has made two appearances for the Three Lions’ under-21 squad, while he has eight outings under his belt for loan side Aberdeen.

While Woodman might not be with Newcastle right now, there is no doubt the Magpies will want to be kept firmly in the loop over any issues he suffers with either Aberdeen or England, for he is touted as one of the brightest young talents to emerge on Tyneside in recent years. There is every chance he will return from Scotland to challenge for a role in the first team next season and at 21, they will want him fighting fit, sorting out any injury issues sooner rather than later. Newcastle, England and Aberdeen will all hope that it is a minor injury, such as bruising on the hip, rather than something long term which will possibly need surgery either now or later down the line.
