Newcastle have expressed their interest in taking Arsenal defender Calum Chambers on loan, but Southampton are also ready to offer £20million for his services, according to a report.
Former senior Sky Sports reporter Graeme Bailey has wrote for the Gambling Times that the Magpies are one of three clubs to be eyeing the Gunners’ 22-year-old.
It is detailed that Premier League duo Everton and Bournemouth are also looking at Chambers.
However, Southampton, are reportedly ready to smash their transfer budget for the versatile defender, who they let go for £16million just three years a go.
The young centre-back spent the last season on loan in the north east with eventual relegated club Middlesbrough, where he played 27 times in all competitions.
It is now understood that he is set to hold talks about his future with Arsenal when he returns from England Under-21s duty later in the summer.
But, it is also believed that Chambers, who still has three years remaining on his contract is unsure about his future due to last summer signing and emerging centre-back Rob Holding’s progress.
Football Insider verdict:
Chambers is one of those players who moved to a bigger club too early and now he has seen his development stifle. He is also not sure on his main position with managers also not yet able to make a decision on whether he is a centre-back or a right-back by trade. A boss like Rafa Benitez could certainly help him recapture what initially saw him make the switch to Arsenal for big money in 2014, but Newcastle may also be better looking at a more dependable player this summer.
In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies are favourites to sign this 23-year-old Premier League champion.
