Report: Pochettino to leave Tottenham revelation on sidelines as fitness doubts continue
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is set to leave midfielder Harry Winks on the sidelines of the first team as his niggling ankle injury refuses to go away, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim on their website that the 22-year-old, who was a revelation in the centre of the park earlier in the season, still has doubts over his fitness and there are fears he will miss the World Cup with England as a result of his failure to recover.
It is said that while his international career might suffer as a result, so will his career with Spurs, with Pochettino continuing to play it safe over the youngster’s situation and leave him out of the first team squad.
Winks, who has 25 appearances under his belt this season, has not turned out in the league since December, and has just one unused substitute appearance in the last eight matches.
Football Insider verdict
The youngster was tipped to be one of the brightest midfield talents for club and country and his early season form suggested he would live up to the hype. However, this injury blow is threatening to curtail the bright start to his career and leave him chasing what could have been. He needs to work on sorting this ankle niggle out and if that means surgery, then so be it. It would be better to get it dealt with now, at the start of his career, rather than letting it continue to plague his development. There will be future World Cups he can take part in, but he will not be selected if he allows his progress to stagnate.
