Report outlines crucial demands in key Benitez talks at Newcastle - timeline revealed
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is likely to demand that assurances made during contract negotiations are put in writing if he is to sign a new deal, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim on their website that the Magpies are biding their time over offering the Spaniard an extension to his current contract, which is set to expire in the summer of 2019, and that key figures Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley are not set to engage over a move to tie him down for the foreseeable future.
It is said that there is a £6million release clause in the manager’s contract but that any discussions are likely to be held off until the middle of May, although Benitez himself is reportedly open to committing to a future on Tyneside.
However, with problems over transfer funding during his time at the club, it is claimed that any assurances over such issues made by owner Mike Ashley will have to be part of the written contract, in order to keep the British businessman to his word.
Football Insider verdict
While all seems well and good at St James’ Park right now, news of a £6million release clause will have Newcastle fans sweating over the future of Rafa Benitez. He is already an icon at the club and has galvanised the supporters into pushing in one direction when Mike Ashley had torn them apart. Premier League safety is the be all and end all right now. Then, and only then, can any discussions be held over his future. Ashley will know whether he wants to sell, and if not, how much money he is willing to back a manager, whether Benitez or otherwise, with. The television money earned from being in the top flight will impact his decision, so talks may well be slow as the income rolls in.
