Aston Villa are inching closer to signing Barnsley duo Conor Hourihane and James Bree, according to a report.
The Mirror claim in their transfer blog on Monday afternoon (15:09 pm) that the Tykes stars are due at Villa’s training ground Bodymoor Heath later in the day for medicals.
It is said Villa are close to pulling off a £5million double swoop for playmaker Hourihane and defender Bree.
Both played in Barnsley’s stunning 3-2 victory against Yorkshire rivals Leeds at the weekend, with Hourihane netting a magnificent free-kick.
Now, they could be swapping Yorkshire for the Midlands as Steve Bruce’s side aim to close the nine-point gap on the top six in the Championship.
Football Insider verdict:
If Villa can pull off a £5million double swoop for Hourihane and Bree then it would be a magnificent piece of multiple transfer business. The duo have been on fire for Barnsley this season, with Hourihane being the club’s standout performer with 12 assists and six goals. At this moment in time, Villa have only made one permanent signing in midfielder Henri Lansbury for a reported fee of £3million. Signing the trio for less than a combine £10million would be a financial and playing double whammy. Bruce’s side dropped more valuable points at the weekend and they need seem much-needed freshness to their side. Lansbury provided that for 70 minutes against Preston and the incoming duo can do the same if they put pen to paper.
In other Aston Villa transfer news, this senior player wants to reportedly quit by next week.
