Tottenham have held talks with the representatives of Napoli midfielder Jorginho over what would potentially be a record breaking swoop this summer, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim on their website that the Lilywhites are among a whole host of Premier League sides hunting the 26-year-old enforcer ahead of the transfer window, with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United all said to be keen on snapping him up.
It is claimed that the Italian side would be willing to let their central star depart for a huge fee of £53million, which would represent the biggest spend ever by Spurs, trumping the reported £42million spent on securing Davinson Sanchez last summer.
Football Insider verdict
If there was one area of the pitch that you would say Tottenham were pretty well equipped, it would be the centre of midfield, so the reported pursuit of Jorginho throws up some interesting questions. Are Spurs simply jumping on the Premier League bandwagon, or are they really keen on splashing out huge amounts of money in the middle of the pitch? If the latter, then it can only mean that at least one of the current options is on their way out, for there is little chance anyone would be willing to play second fiddle. Spurs have got a relatively decent record of making the most of their money – the £30million capture of Moussa Sissoko a rare exception – and if contact has been made then they will know exactly what Napoli are looking for to seal his exit. Beating the likes of Manchester City to his capture would be a real coup too.
