Tottenham have joined some of the biggest names in world football in hot pursuit of Olympique Lyonnais wonderkid Willem Geubbels, according to a report.
Austrian publication Salzburger Nachrichten have claimed on their website that Austrian Bundesliga side Red Bull Salzburg saw an approach for the 16-year-old winger refused by the player’s agent, before naming Spurs among the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Liverpool as other potential suitors.
The young speed-machine, who is a natural on the left flank but can also play on the right or as a centre forward, made his debut for Lyon this season, and already has four appearances under his belt; two in France’s top flight, one in the French League Cup and and another in the Europa League.
He has been a regular with France’s youth sides, and has seven appearances and two goals for the under-18s, despite only having made his first appearance back in August.
Football Insider verdict
While there can be mitigating factors which lead to a 16-year-old appearing for a top flight side, it shows the faith that Lyon have in him to have handed him four appearances this season. He is evidently destined for great things and the clubs which are said to be in pursuit are testament to the progress he has shown. Will he move in January? If Red Bull Salzburg have seen a deal turned down, then perhaps not, but they of course are not at the level of the likes of Bayern or Chelsea. If a big hitter came calling, then things might be different, and with Tottenham’s reputation of developing young talent, they could be an attractive prospect for the youngster.
In other Tottenham news, the club are already in hot pursuit of the perfect replacement for Toby Alderweireld.
