Tottenham are lining up raiding Manchester United for goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer when his contract runs out at the end of the season, according to a report.
The Sun claim on their website that the Lilywhites have identified the 25-year-old shot stopper as a potential replacement for senior star Michel Vorm, who is also out of contract this summer and is set to leave the north London side.
Johnstone has spent the season on loan at Championship side Aston Villa and has made 43 appearances, turning out in every league game in their push for a play off spot.
Meanwhile Vorm, 34, has been relied upon as understudy to first choice keeper and club captain Hugo Lloris, and has 10 outings to his name this season.
Football Insider verdict
Johnstone will no doubt have many suitors throwing glances his way in the summer and he could have a difficult decision on his hands considering it will be his choice as to where he ends up next. If Villa can secure their way back into the top flight via the play offs, then it must be Steve Bruce’s men who will lead the queue for his capture, but staying in the Championship will give the likes of Spurs a chance to pounce. Will he want to be understudy to Lloris? Probably not, but the chance to feature in the cups, as well as be in line to step up in case of the Frenchman suffering injury, suspension or awful form, could be tempting. One to watch this summer.
In other Tottenham transfer news, the club’s top target must be a powerhouse sensation after a big money revelation.
