Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has been ruled out of the club’s clash with Newport County despite having claimed he was fully fit just days ago, according to a report.
The London Evening Standard claim on their website that the Belgian international will not play any part in Spurs’ FA Cup tie against the League Two side with manager Mauricio Pochettino choosing not to risk him after his long term absence through injury.
The Argentine boss had stated that the 28-year-old centre back would be tested alongside several other absentees prior to Saturday’s game, but the Standard’s report suggests that he needs to work on his fitness further before returning for the first team.
However Alderweireld himself gave a contradictory statement just days ago, insisting that he felt that he was “100 per cent” in an interview with Sky Sports News.
He has been ruled out of action with a hamstring injury suffered in the 3-1 defeat over Real Madrid in the Champions League back at the very start of November, a blow which has kept him out of the club’s last 17 matches.
He had been a first team stalwart prior to his substitution against the Spanish giants, playing every minute of all but one of the club’s matches across all competitions since the start of the season.
In other Tottenham news, Gary Lineker says the club are at a ‘watershed moment’ and must do one crucial thing to ensure success.
