Celtic are in the market for a central midfielder in January to lighten the load on star pair Scott Brown and Callum McGregor, Football Insider has learned.

Neil Lennon has relied heavily upon McGregor, 26, and skipper Brown, 34, this season but is wary of burning them out.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club's recruitment team have begun their search for a defensive midfielder who can instantly compete for a starting position.

One proven performer on their radar will be Tottenham star Victor Wanyama, although Celtic would only be able to afford a loan deal if his £65,000-a-week wage costs are shared.

The 28-year-old has made just one start for Spurs this season among three appearances after coming close to joining Club Brugges in the summer on a permanent deal.

Lennon is aware of the demands on the bodies of McGregor and Brown.

The Scotland regular has already started 26 matches for Celtic this season, while the veteran captain has started 25 games plus added one more as a substitute.

Lennon is not convinced by Olivier Ntcham in central midfield and believes his talents are best used in a more attacking role.

The Northern Irishman has few other senior options, but an injury to either McGregor or Brown would leave Celtic light in such a key position.
