Liverpool are set to complete the signing of Stuttgart star Wataru Endo in the next hours as he heads to Merseyside for a medical, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League club have had a £16million bid accepted by the Bundesliga club for the 30-year-old and he has already agreed personal terms.

Liverpool are confident there will be none of the late drama involved in their pursuits of midfield duo Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, who both opted for moves to Chelsea, despite Liverpool agreeing transfer fees with their clubs.

The transfer of Endo has been driven by Liverpool’s new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke, who was appointed in May.

Endo is expected to be Liverpool's final midfield signing of the summer but they are still in the market for a senior defensive signing.

Jurgen Klopp has prioritised the capture of a new holding midfielder after Fabinho and Jordan Henderson joined clubs in the Saudi Pro League this summer.

Against Chelsea on Sunday, Liverpool deployed Alexis Mac Allister at the base of their midfield, restricting his creative influence.

Endo, who has one year left on his contract at the Bundesliga outfit, joined Stuttgart initially on loan in 2019 from the Belgian Pro League side Sint-Truiden before making the deal permanent a year later.

He made 33 Bundesliga starts among 40 appearances last season, scoring six goals and providing five assists.
