Revealed: The £35million striker Mourinho wants Manchester United to sign this summer

By Italy correspondent Gianluigi Carrozzini

Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United to sign Inter Milan hotshot Mauro Icardi this summer, Football Insider sources understand.

The Portugese, who is set to be installed at Old Traffard at the end of the season, is a big admirer of the Argentina striker.

Inter have confirmed Mourinho will be at the San Siro on Saturday night to watch his former club in action against Sampdoria, and a well-placed source has told Football Insider  that Icardi is on his radar.

Inter president Erick Thohir has insisted in an interview with Sky Italia that the Italian giants will not sell Icardi in the summer because “he’s part of our project”.

But Inter will almost certainly have to cash in on one of their prize assets if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Icardi, 23, is rated in the £35million bracket due to his goalscoring exploits in Serie A. He has scored 10 goals in 22 league matches this season, and 46 in 94 matches in all competitions for Inter since his 2013 transfer from Sampdoria.

Meanwhile, speaking to the Italian media on Friday, Mourinho made it clear he will not be managing the Italian club next season.

He said: “I go for a day in Milan to personally say thanks to my president Mister Moratti. I left Inter in 2010 and since then work was hard every day in Madrid and Chelsea, and it was difficult to find a moment to have lunch with the Moratti family.

Target man: Mourinho has agreed to become the next United manager

“We agreed on this Saturday a few weeks ago, and yes, after a family day we will go to San Siro, with an ‘Interista’ spirit, with the hope and the happiness to see Inter win.

“It will be a great emotion for me – San Siro and the Interisti – but let me make it clear… I will not be Inter manager next season.

“Inter has a project, a project that belongs to Mister Thohir and Mister Roberto Mancini, a project that I totally support and wish will end in success. I want the Interisti to smile again, and hopefully tomorrow we all smile with Inter back to victories.”
