Liverpool are plotting a move for 30-year-old Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, according to a report.
Manager Jurgen Klopp is looking to address their goalkeeping options in the summer – which has been a problem area for them this season – and according to the Daily Star, they have lined up Schmeichel as a potential target.
The 30-year-old shot-stopper had an instrumental role as Leicester lifted the Premier League title last season, and is valued by the club as high as £30million.
Schmeichel has kept 24 clean sheets from 63 appearances since the start of last season. However, Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri remains defiant that the Denmark international will not be leaving the club.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has found the form and inconsistencies of Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius a particular area of concern at Anfield this season, and is expected to bring in a new stopper at the end of the season.
The German chief, however, opted against adding a new goalkeeper to his ranks in last month’s transfer window, but may already regret the decision after Mignolet’s calamitous error in the defeat to Hull last week.
Klopp has already rotated his goalkeeping options once this term, dropping summer signing Karius after a series of errors, and making another U-turn would be a humiliating act for the Liverpool chief.
It is reported that Arsenal could be interested in Schmeichel as well.
The Gunners number one Petr Cech has come under fire for his performances and his advancing years means he could be axed in favour of a new stopper.
The 34-year-old had a forgettable day at the office when Arsenal lost to Chelsea last week, taking full responsibility for the Blues third goal with a poor clearance.
Goalkeeping errors have cost both sides in their pursuit of the league title this season, and they are expected to make amends at the earliest opportunity.
Football Insider verdict
Both Arsenal and Liverpool have issues to resolve in the goalkeeping department, but it is perhaps a more pressing concern for Liverpool. Klopp made the emphatic decision to axe Mignolet as his No.1 goalkeeper at the start of the season, and brought in Karius instead; but the decision has since backfired. Mignolet has not covered himself in glory either, and the errors continue to cost Liverpool. Arsenal, on the other hand, have not had quite such bad luck, but it has become clear that Cech is no-longer a long-term solution for the club. However, while there may well be changes made in the summer, Schmeichel is not likely to be one of them. At £30million, both clubs could get much better for their money – Joe Hart, for example, could be available for a lot less.
In other Liverpool transfer news, Klopp is set to add two players to his ranks in this one position in the summer.
