Robinson backs Aston Villa to beat two rivals to Hennessey signing after Palace news
Wayne Hennessey would be the ideal replacement for Tom Heaton at Aston Villa if he is willing to play second fiddle to Emiliano Martinez, according to Paul Robinson.
However, the former Tottenham and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suspects the 34-year-old wants to challenge for the number one shirt at his next club.
Hennessey was released by Crystal Palace earlier this month after seven-and-a-half years at Selhurst Park.
Football Insider revealed on 14th July that Burnley are in pole position to sign the 96-times Wales international while Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s future is uncertain.
It is understood Chelsea are also in the race to sign Hennessey.
Robinson suggested Aston Villa could also offer the free agent a new contract after Tom Heaton completed a move to Manchester United.

“Hennessey will not have a shortage of takers because of his experience,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.
“He is not a first choice goalkeeper. If he is to move to a Premier League club he will go in as a solid number two, someone who can do a job.
“Villa need to replace Heaton so a move for Hennessey would make a lot of sense.
“But I suspect he will want to be challenging for a number one shirt somewhere to keep alive his international hopes.
“Martinez is a giant. I really think he is brilliant. He is the clear number one at Villa and it would be near impossible for a Hennessey to get game time if he went there. It would only be if Martinez got injured really.
“Villa need somebody who will sit there and be happy to be number two.”
