Paul Robinson has urged Djed Spence to "bide his time" at Tottenham as "opportunities will come" in the near future.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one said the right wing-back position is not "closed off" as Emerson Royal has not been "reliant."

Spence was left out of the Spurs squad that won 6-2 against Leicester City on Saturday (17 September).

The summer signing from Middlesbrough has just one minute of action to his name for Antonio Conte's side this season.

Emerson, Matt Doherty and Ivan Perisic all appear to be ahead of the England under-21 international in the pecking order at Tottenham.

According to Football.London's Alasadair Gold (21 September), Conte wants Spence to do more work behind the scenes because he is not believed to be ready yet.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Spence's situation in north London, Robinson said: "Spence has to bide his time.

"Emerson Royal has not been the most reliant right-back. I do not think it is a position that is closed off. It is up for grabs.

"Spence just has to wait, work hard and his opportunities will come.

"Was it a signing by the club rather than the manager? Time will tell.

"He is not involved but I do think he is a very good player and I am sure he will get his opportunity."
