Ross McCausland’s Rangers career should be over despite upcoming Ibrox return

Ross McCausland should not be offered a route back to the Rangers‘ first team despite his personal aims as numerous European clubs eye a move for his services.

McCausland is set to return to Rangers this summer after pulling the plug on a permanent move to loan side Aris Limassol.

The Northern Ireland winger has shown flashes of brilliance in Cyprus, but not enough to prove his worth to Rangers ahead of the summer.

Rangers should look to sell him on as soon as possible, even though he wants to be included in Danny Rohl’s plans for next season.

It remains to be seen if he will be part of Rangers’ transfer plans, but the club seem to have moved on from him and he should be let go.

Ross McCausland has not done enough to earn Rangers reprieve

McCausland was sent on loan to Limassol last summer after losing his place in the Gers’ squad towards the end of 2024-25.

He has registered four goals and three assists in 21 Cyprus League games, but has remained on the bench for six of their last eight games and last contributed to a goal in January.

McCausland’s season-by-season Rangers stats

McCausland recently insisted that he would like another chance at Rangers this summer, with the Daily Record now revealing that he personally asked Limassol to remove their obligation to buy in his loan deal ahead of the end of the campaign

He is on course to return to Ibrox next month after the Cypriot season ends, but should not be given another chance by Rohl anytime soon.

Rangers already have depth on the right wing and it seems unlikely that the 22-year-old will be able to force his way up the pecking order after some lacklustre form out on loan.

The Record’s latest report also states that several English and European sides are eyeing a move for McCausland this summer.

His contract at Ibrox is set to end next summer, so it seems like a no-brainer to let him leave for a transfer fee in the coming months before he likely departs for nothing in 2027.

What has McCausland said about his aims upon returning to Rangers?

Sources have revealed to Football Insider that Oscar Cortes will leave Rangers this summer after a loan spell at Huracan, and McCausland is in a similar boat and should also look for an exit.

The playmaker has, however, insisted that he still sees a future for himself at Ibrox in a recent interview with the Rangers Review.

After being asked if he thinks he can return to the Gers’ first team setup, he said: “I think you have to. To play at a club like Rangers, you need to have that mindset. Not only do you need to want to play for the club, but you need to believe that you’re good enough to play for the club.

“I think at this stage of the season, when maybe I know I’ll be coming back to start pre-season, all I can really do is leave the best impression I can.

“Listen, if it doesn’t work out, which I would love it to, but if it doesn’t work out, you need to build yourself to know that you need to go somewhere else and try and make a career there.

“At the end of the day, football’s a funny game. Maybe things don’t go your way, but there’s always a way to make a career and all you really need to do is just give your best.”
