Rotherham United in advanced talks with Steve McClaren for director of football role

League One side Rotherham United are in advanced talks to appoint Steve McClaren as their director of football, sources have told Football Insider.

The Millers are preparing for a rebuild on and off the pitch following their relegation to League Two, and the 65-year-old is already in line to take up a boardroom role for the South Yorkshire outfit.

McClaren has been out of work since he left his role in charge of the Jamaican national team last November, but sources say that a move to the New York Stadium could now be imminent.

The former England manager last worked in the EFL in April 2019, when he was sacked by QPR after just under a year as their chief.

Managerless Rotherham to add new level in the boardroom

Rotherham endured a dismal campaign this season, as they slipped back into League Two for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

The Millers have bounced between the third tier and the Championship in recent years, but will now be playing their football in the EFL’s basement tier after the upcoming summer break.

They are planning changes at all levels of the club in the coming months, and they are currently without a manager after Lee Clark’s short-term deal concluded at the end of the season.

Rotherham are now closing in on appointing McClaren as their director of football, with their former defender Rob Scott currently operating in a head of recruitment role.

The move for McClaren appears set to mark the start of the overhaul at the club, with Clark also heavily linked with a return in charge of the team on a permanent basis.

Millers set to lose key star to the Championship

Football Insider revealed on Sunday that Rotherham defender Denzel Hall is attracting strong interest from both Cardiff and Preston ahead of the summer window.

The 24-year-old right-back has been a shining light for Clark’s side amid their horrendous season, and he ended the campaign with four goal involvements from 27 league appearances.

The club are already resigned to losing the versatile star this summer, as they are all too aware that their relegation will make them no match for the Championship interest that is already building.

Hall is under contract with Rotherham until the summer of 2028, but they are prepared to accept offers for him this summer.
