Ryan Giggs: This is what Liverpool need if they want to win Premier League

By Alex Stephens

Liverpool fans wouldn’t expect praise for their team to come from a Manchester United legend, but Ryan Giggs is impressed with what he’s seen in Klopp’s side.

Talking in his column in The Telegraph, Giggs says that he was hoping Liverpool would win the Europa League final last season, as the strain of Champions League football would have hampered their ability to win the league.

With their midweeks free, Giggs believes “Liverpool have put themselves in contention this year.” However, he still thinks they’re missing out on one vital ingredient – a goal machine.

“What they lack is a goalscorer who might get them 20 goals in a season,” Giggs said.

“And while Sadio Mane or Daniel Sturridge might prove me wrong, you do need one of those in a title-winning team.

“All the recent champions have had one: Jamie Vardy, Diego Costa, Yaya Toure (who scored 20 goals in 2013-2014, although Sergio Aguero is Manchester City’s key striker), Robin Van Persie.

“At the other end I do not think they have a goalkeeper who is among the top players in that position in the league, although that could change over time.”

Liverpool have never won the Premier League, although they came close in the 2013/14 season when a 2-0 defeat at home to Chelsea ended up costing them the trophy.

They are currently third in the league after a fast start to the season, on the same points as leaders Manchester City and Arsenal.

It looks like it could be the tightest Premier League in years, with the top five teams separated by just a single point.

In other Liverpool news, fans have called for the return of Daniel Sturridge on Twitter.
