'Saudis' tipped to complete 'four easy Newcastle transfers' in January after what pundit's seen

Frank McAvennie claims Newcastle could sign a whole new defence in January as they failed to win in the Premier League for the ninth time this season.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the Magpies have the “worst defence in the league”.

Newcastle drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace on Saturday, failing to win and meaning they have conceded 20 goals already this season.

The Toon had conceded the most goals of any top flight side this season before Norwich were smashed for seven by Chelsea earlier in the day.

Newcastle have the capacity to spend big in January after a Saudi-backed consortium bought the club earlier this month.

McAvennie insists newly-rich Newcastle must focus on strengthening the defence if they want to stay in the Premier League.

“They haven’t signed any new defenders since they came up, have they?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I mean, that’s the obvious problem. It is just different variations of the backline Rafa had in the Championship.

“People are scratching their heads thinking about where Newcastle are going wrong. Is it not obvious?

“They have signed new attackers and they are doing a reasonable job.

“The defence has had no support or improvement and it’s the worst in the league.

“That’s not just my opinion, that’s a fact. No side had conceded more until recently. I’ve not been impressed.

“I don’t think Newcastle fans would be bothered if the Saudis replaced the entire defence in January.

“There are four easy transfers for you.”

Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark who started against Palace, were both signed when Newcastle were in the Championship.

Jamaal Lascelles was already at the club but emerged as a key player in the second tier.
