St Mirren defender Miguel Freckleton is in advanced talks to join Austrian champions LASK, sources have told Football Insider.

Freckleton impressed watching scouts with his performances for St Mirren last season, and LASK have moved to offer him the opportunity to move to the Austrian Bundesliga.

The 22-year-old was named St Mirren's Young Player of the Year and Men's Player of the Year last time out, after making 47 appearances across all competitions.

Freckleton was among the leading centre-backs in the Scottish Premiership for tackles and recoveries last season, while he also ranks highly in posession and passing stats.

However, less than one year after he joined from Sheffield United for a six-figure fee in July 2025, the centre-back is closing in on a permanent move away.

Freckleton signed a two-year deal with St Mirren last summer, but his impressive performances saw interest rise, and he is now set to move on after advanced talks.

Why are LASK persuing a deal for Miguel Freckleton?

A number of European sides are believed to have been keeping tabs on Freckleton's performances for St Mirren, after an impressive first season in Scotland.

LASK have been aiming to strengthen at the back this summer, with their star centre-back Modou Keba Cisse having moved to the Premier League with Aston Villa.

The Austrian Bundesliga outfit are aiming to bolster their squad to continue their run of success, and will hope to retain the league title next season with some key additions.

Freckleton's performances in the Scottish Premiership saw him identified as a leading candidate for the Autrian champions, who have now moved quickly to agree terms.

Talks with the centre-back are ongoing, but are progressing well, and all parties are keen to reach an agreement over his permanent switch in the coming days.

How does Freckleton compare to Modou Keba Cisse?

Freckleton's expected arrival at LASK has come as they eyed a direct replacement for the departing Cisse, who will finally complete his move to Aston Villa.

The centre-back signed for the Villans from the Linz-based club last summer in a deal worth around £4million, and has spent the season on loan.

He established himself as one of the best defenders in the Austrian Bundesliga despite his age, and ranks highly in a number of key areas when compared to Freckleton.

Per 90 last season, Cisse recored a passing accuracy of 85.3 per cent, compared to Freckleton's 81.8, while he completed 4.32 accurate long balls, while his replacement completed 3.70.

Both players rank highly when compared to other defenders in their domestic leagues when it comes to passing and creating chances, while their defensive stats are also similar.

Cisse and Freckleson also both rank highly for tackles and recoveries per 90, with the latter completing 4.16 and 1.62, compared to the new arrival's 5.73 and 2.16.
